Peden's "Revolutionary Patriots of Frederick County Maryland" does not list any Revolutionary War-associated activity for John Ritchie in Frederick County. He is not included on the Associator list of 1776, Carother's list of those who took the Oath of Allegiance, or lists of Frederick militia from the Revolutionary period. His title as Colonel may be based on his appointment as Lieutenant-colonel of the Sixteenth Regiment Militia on May 9, 1812. He had previously been identified as Lieutenant of the volunteer company in Frederick in 1807.
