There were two James Smiths living in the area during the Revolutionary period, one in Frederick City and the other near Antietam. It is unclear to which man the patriotic service pertains. Edward Papenfuse' A Biographical Dictionary of the Maryland Legislature 1635-1789 outlines the confusion over these two men.
