Slemmer received the 3rd Division Citation for Gallantry in Action. On the nights of 14th and 15th of July, 1918, at Courboin, France, during the severe barrage, incident of the big attack launched by the enemy along the entire front of the Marne Sector, while stationed at the 7th Regimental Aid Station at Courboin, without orders from high commanding officers, made numerous trips under intense shell fire, for wounded men, and assisted in the dressing of their injuries while under fire in the open areas. Again on the 17th day of October, 1918, in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, he volunteered to take supplies, medicine, and food to the Battalion Aid Station at Madelaine Farm, from Cierges, and rendering himself open to the intense artillery fire that was sweeping the entire section
